THWA has experience in evaluating the fate and transport of contaminants at a wide variety of sites under the auspices of Federal (RCRA and CERCLA), State, and Local Agencies throughout the country. Sites evaluated by personnel from THWA include gasoline service stations, refineries, landfills, petroleum pipelines, chemical production facilities, and fire training areas.
THWA has worked on several high-profile CERCLA site including the Landfill 1 (LF-1) site at the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR). This project involved conducting a focused feasibility study to evaluate several extraction, treatment, and reinjection (ERT) scenarios at the site. Also evaluated was monitored natural attenuation both in conjunction with ERT and as a stand-alone remedy. After evaluting the various remedial alternatives using the “CERCLA Nine” criteria, one of the less expensive ERT systems in conjunction with monitored natural attenuation was selected. It was estimated by Air Force personnel that THWA saved the taxpayer $120M whicle still achieving the same level of protection and cleanup timeframe.
