The first step in evaluating any site is to review the historic environmental and operational data. A review of these data allows for the development of a preliminary conceptual model. This model should help identify any data shortcomings and will facilitate placement of additional data collection points in the most scientifically advantageous and cost-effective manner possible, as required. In some cases the collection of additional data may not be necessary. In any event, a forensic data analysis provides a basis to focus resources on those areas with identified or potential environmental impacts.
Forensic data review provides:
-
An evaluation of the current understanding of site conditions
-
Basis for the need of any, or continued regulatory oversight
-
A basis of justification for allocation of funds;
-
A basis of understanding the anticipated level of effort
-
A summary of existing data in comprehensive tables
-
A summary of site operational history
-
An aid in steering regulators to areas of actual or potential environmental impacts or areas of concern
-
Identification outside influences or parties contributing to any identified impacts
-
An evaluation of to determine if additional data are required for site evaluation.
Our risk-based approach is predicated on a thorough review of existing data (forensic data analysis) which allows us to make maximum use of existing data so that the “wheel” does not have to be reinvented. Do not collect data that already has been collected.
